Paying for a theme / template from the get-go starts you off with a nice start on which you can build upon in the future.

Free themes can be good if you find just the right one, but involve searching around, and remember that you are sometimes limited as to what you can do with these, what you can modify, the add-ons (plug-ins) you can include, etc., whereas when you actually purchase a specific theme, you almost are always getting something better than whats included with those free ones since you are paying for a theme.
