If you have a normal job, then thats great!
However, how long will it last?
Are you happy there?
What will happen to you & your family should you suddenly be laid off?
Will you end up losing everything that you have managed to build over the years?
These are all very realistic questions that you should be asking yourself right now.

I firmly believe that the only way to guarantee that you survive though these tough times that Michigan is facing, is by starting your own business, or some type of sideline business, to supplement your income.

There are plenty of ways to accomplish this, and you don’t necessarily have to create a million dollar business, either. Don’t think “big business” – think small business.
Heck, you don’t even have to think of it as a business. Think of it as a means to keep your family afloat, with numerous extra advantages such as: tax write-offs, a means of acquiring some products and merchandise that you’d be using (and buying) anyways.
Wouldn’t it be great to transfer all (or almost all) of your regular purchases that you don’t think twice about buying, into “business” expenses that you are able to deduct on your taxes (hence, let your business buy them) so that you, personally, don’t have to?

Now, of course, you have to be able to justify the purchases as a “business” expense, meaning you can’t just buy whatever you like, but the more that your business CAN buy, the less YOU have to. All businesses are set up differently, and are able to do (and not do) certain things, so you should always consult a tax advisor about such things as this.

Aside from the tax advantages, the main purpose of getting started with your own business, obviously, is to make money. Work online from home. Thats what I recommend. It’s relatively easy to start, doesn’t cost a lot to begin, and you can proceed today!

It’s as simple as going down to your local county clerk and obtaining a DBA (Doing Business As) certificate. A DBA lets you use a different name other than your own. Costs $10-20 here in Michigan. Why get a DBA? Because you want to show that you are actively creating a “business” and not just a hobby or making extra money. Remember tax advantages? You’re not allowed to deduct expenses for a hobby! But as a business, you can deduct the expenses that you use for “business” purposes.

Depending on what exactly you intend to do in your new business venture, whether you are selling locally or online (yes, most businesses “sell” something), should determine the way you structure your business. There’s more ways (and safer ways) than just getting a DBA. You could set up a corporation, with S or C chapters, start a partnership, or a popular one here in Michigan is getting an LLC (Limited Liability Company). They all have different requirements, benefits, pros and cons. Consult a tax advisor or lawyer! These are outside the scope of this article though, so enough of that.

There are literally tons of ways of making money when you work online from home. You could sell stuff on Ebay, Amazon, etc. You could create adsense type websites, or sell ebooks or other products from your own websites. You could be an affiliate for someone elses products and get paid a commission when you sell something for them.
